Garlic is one of the oldest known horticultural crops in the world. It originated from the rugged arid steppes of south central Asia-- northern Iran, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan-- and has been cultivated for thousands of years for culinary and medicinal purposes. There are two subspecies of garlic: Hardnecks and softnecks and several hundred cultivars are grown world wide. Culinary Garlic are 1.5-2" heads and are sold by the pound. ~7 bulbs in a pound.
